Tornado Flattens Greensburg, Kansas
May 5An F5 tornado devastated the small farming town of Greensburg, Kansas, Friday night, killing eight people and leveling homes and churches. Peace Lutheran Church in Greensburg was destroyed, along with many of its member's homes.
Kansas District President Rev. Keith E. Kohlmeier called Greensburg the epicenter, with a corridor of damage through nearby communities Claflin, Ellinwood, Macksville, and Holyrood.Search and rescue efforts were thwarted by continued storms, which caused blowing debris and unsafe conditions. Thunderstorms are expected in the area Monday and Tuesday but residents were allowed back to their homes Monday morning to assess their personal property damage. President Bush declared parts of Kansas a disaster area Sunday, releasing federal aid to residents.
LCMS World Relief and Human Care Director of Disaster Response Rev. Glenn Merritt, and Rev. Carlos Hernandez, director for districts and congregations arrived in Kansas Monday morning to provide support as needed to District Counselor Rev. John W. Sharp and Rev. Tim Henning, who serves at Peace and at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pratt, Kansas.
“I told Pastor Henning that we would keep him and his congregation in our prayers, and offered our full assistance,” said Rev. Merritt.
Merritt will meet Tuesday with partners including Kansas District Disaster Director Rocky Mease, the Kansas Lutheran Disaster Response team and others, to determine how best to respond as the body of Christ to the need and loss in the area.
